How Informal Settings Are Changing Conversations Around Gender and Sexuality
In many communities, conversations around gender and sexuality remain engraved in silence, often considered a taboo and unfit for open discussion especially with young people. Deep-rooted cultural beliefs and societal expectations have made it difficult for adolescents to speak out, ask questions, express their concerns, or seek accurate information. However, a number of initiatives are proving that informal settings can help in debunking these taboos and promote inclusive, respectful discussions.
Unlike formal educational methods like in classroom settings, informal spaces such as picnics create a relaxed environment where participants feel free to speak openly. The relaxed nature of these gatherings makes it easier for sensitive topics to be introduced like menstruation, sexual education, and gender-based violence subjects that are often difficult to discuss in more formal and stiff learning environments.
This can be seen in the SRHR educative picnic organized by CAGEAD in Njinikom. The picnic used games, poems, and storytelling to address topics related to sexual and reproductive health. What made the event engaging was the atmosphere. Sitting on mats and engaging in playful yet educational activities allowed adolescent girls and young women (AGYWs) to speak freely and ask questions they might never dare to ask in a formal environment. These informal moments created a platform and a safe space for real, honest conversations and helped to challenge myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, relationships, and reproductive health.
Peer-led discussions in informal spaces builds trust among them. Young people are more likely to listen, engage with messages when they come from individuals who share similar experiences or speak their language. This peer-to-peer model and informal setting not only makes the conversation more engaging but also empowers youth to become ambassadors for change within their communities.
