CAGEAD uses entertainment to raise awareness on SRHR

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYWs) from Boyo Division have been empowered and educated on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) through the creative use of entertainment and fun activities. This was achieved during a SRHR-themed educative picnic organized by CAGEAD, in collaboration with the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) as an activity under the project aimed at promoting positive sexuality among AGYWs. The goal of the event was to promote SRHR among AGYWs in Boyo Division by using engaging and interactive methods to create a supportive environment where young women and girls can make informed decisions about their health and overall well-being.

The picnic took place on Friday, July 4th, 2025, in Njinikom and brought together 30 AGYWs from Njinikom, Belo, and Fundong. It featured activities designed to educate and entertain. These included SRHR-related games, poetry recitations, and open discussions on topics such as menstruation, teenage pregnancy, healthy relationships, and adolescent growth and development. The event provided an opportunity for the girls to connect with nature, socialize with peers, and express themselves in a relaxed and inclusive setting.

Participants noted that the combination of fun and learning made the event especially impactful.

Kuma Christiancia Nange, one of the AGYWs who attended, shared her experience: “I am very happy to have been part of the picnic. It was fun sitting on mats, playing games, and discussing menstruation with fellow peer educators while enjoying snacks. Listening to the poems, I learned about the importance of making informed choices about my body and well-being, and how to care for my reproductive health.”

The picnic also featured inspirational moments led by female role models who motivated the participants to embrace their potential and pursue their dreams. One of such role model, youth leader Tohnain Lydia, shared her personal journey, which resonated deeply with the girls and encouraged them to believe in themselves. Her story inspired the participants, including

Ndi Rozette, who expressed, “I got really inspired today listening to the youth leader speak to us. I now feel encouraged and empowered to dream big, be hardworking, and take charge of my life. I’m going to take her advice seriously so I can secure a promising future.”

The event demonstrated the effectiveness of blending education with entertainment as a means of raising awareness. By making learning enjoyable and relatable, CAGEAD was able to equip these young women with knowledge and skills that will empower them to live healthier and more informed lives. As they return to their communities, they carry with them the confidence, knowledge, and motivation needed to live healthy and empowered lives.
